I would like to know how to best size and choose an asphalt hot box or recycler. Apart from mixing in additive is there much difference between a hot box ad a recycler?

Great question.
We don’t carry Asphalt Recyclers at this time but we do have Asphalt Hot Boxes that are quite unique to the asphalt industry and are growing in demand as contractors realize the price is within their reach.
I’ll provide you with some guidance on selecting a hot box that matches your needs.
You should always note that hot asphalt plants (99% of the time) only sell a two ton mix at a time and pour at one time as their turbines and cylinders support a minimum of a 2 ton mix for a proper dump.
With this being said you should choose a hot box that holds a minimum of 2 tons.
A few features to make sure that a hot box has to be sure it is safe and efficient are as follows:
• Make sure that the hot box sub frame is extremely well built to prevent walls from warping.
• Make sure that the gauge of steel on the inside walls and outside walls are strong enough to support the full load. You should have 10 gauge on the inside walls and 14 gauge on the outer walls for proper support.
• Make sure that your trailer or vehicle can support the full load capacity. Two tons of asphalt weighs 4000 LBS plus the weight of the hot box will be around 1200 LBS = 5200 total LBS.
• Make sure that the hot box is extremely well ventilated in case the propane burners go out.
• Make sure that your torches and propane lines have regulators.
• You always want the internal walls to be angled on a slope so that the asphalt slides towards the shovel door.
• Make sure that the hot box keeps the asphalt hot for up to 14 hours at a time.
• Make sure the box you select comes with a complete warranty (usually 1 to 2 years). The hot box product that we have developed at AsphaltKingdom.com is a high quality item that carries all of the above features and more and really is a fraction of the price ($5,975 with free shipping) of many of the other similar hot box applications in the market priced at $10,000 and up.
In fact – most contractors just think this kind of product is ‘out of their reach’ price wise – but we have really changed that with our AK Hot Box prices at less than $6,000 delivered to the door.
Rob, if you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to contact us directly. We are here to advise you no matter what direction you choose.
All the best,
