How can you determine, in the field, the quality of your hot rubber materials?

A lot of discussion has been made recently, mainly due to the crude oil price spike, about equipment and sealant reliability issues associated with increasing the filler content of hot rubber crack sealant.
Apart from choosing a reputable supplier, how else can a contractor or municipality determine sealant quality without extensive laboratory testing etc.
Is there a quick way to check your batch?
There are also materials being used that tend to react with other materials when you change product or application.These reactions have been known to clog hoses and gum up pumps etc.
How can a ‘reactivity’ issue be avoided when changing suppliers or materials?
