    Hello Lac
    …a couple things…
    1) I’ve only used CL once…through a Conventional…BUT…
    2) It sprays just like Alkyd = “Oil Based”.
    3) I’ve had the same problem in a different circumstance…

I used a “High Solids” paint…with a tip that had an orifice that was too small.
    I don’t know what tip you have…
BUT…it should be YELLOW…I have a Video on my site about this. You can purchase it cheaply…it’s downloaded right away…it’s yours.
    That said…try a semi bigger orifice…such as…319…or even a 321….YELLOW…not Black…tip…!
    Next…switch buckets of paint.
Next…there may be a chance…slim…that the paint needs…either strained…or there are pieces that should not be there.
God forbid glass beads get in there.
Last…try those and get back to me.
I need to get to my shop but I’ll be back. If we ned to talk…we’ll do that.
You have a nice machine…by the way.

I just gave your name = WorkingBuckeye to a person that contacted me through eBay. They wanted to buy a used Kelly.
    Sounded too cool.
Again…I just sent them this address and your name. Told them to look under the Striper Forum.
    I hope that works.

I’m a striper. I really have no clue…but…I was waiting for a seal coat crew to finish a small parking lot.
Then the “Wand” guy lifted the wand so high…then the wind kicked in…and I saw it…the spray hit a little Mustang.
I thought the girl was gonna cry. It wasn’t too bad…but the owner surprised me…( of the Seal Coat crew. )
He went to her house and used that waterless hand cleaner. The kind every mechanic uses. Not the kind with GRIT…! The water less kind. GoJo? AGAIN…not the kind with GRIT…! They sell it in every Auto Parts Store.
He said it came right off.
If that’s an answer…great. If I helped…cool. If not…I’m sorry. But I had to share it.
    Let me know.

I haven’t. That said…when SW said they were out…Glidden had plenty. When Glidden didn’t get any Yellow…PPG had it.
I cannot speak for the entire country…or a smaller metropolis…but I’ve only been “inconvenienced” once or twice.
    Next…when I did find it…I bought…like everybody else…40 more gallons…than I needed. Thus…creating…another shortage…well…kinda.
Then…prices went up at ONE of the stores. The others didn’t. Now…PPG says…”That’s over…we have plenty”. And…I like their paint.
Next…there are many smaller chains around the country too…not Just the big 3. I mention these in one of my videos…and I list them in my book.
    I hope I helped.

    Hello venterprises
I tell how to price in my book.
BUT…just be careful…you’re dealing with Prevailing Wages. So…every city will dictate how much you have to pay each worker. That will effect pricing.
THEN…you must submit a Certified Payroll…which is simply this…you must prove that you paid that worker…what that City told you to pay.
NEXT…sometimes…if you do not offer Health Benefits…you must include $4.00 additional dollars.
    That said…do it. I do…everyday.
NEXT…if you have a Sub…then he’s on his own to do the same…meet the standard Prevailing wage…etc. Certify Payrolls…etc.
You may fumble through it at first…but…you will get it.
    NEXT…when you say Gov’t Entity…read the specs…every time. ( Unless you’re hiring a Sub. )
    Sometimes…as a Striper… I’m required to add Glass beads. Sometimes…two coats…sometimes…none…sometimes 6″ line…blah blah.
And…there will be inspectors. Not a problem. These are just people too.
Again…keep going. This is the place where most people stop.
    Congrats.

    I don’t have a 4″ tip.
I posted a video on tips on my site.
    I don’t like spraying at a 12″ height.
    I use a 6″ tip…and lower the gun.
Also…if the line I’m Re-striping is 4.75″ wide…I can still cover it with my 6″ tip. I just raise the gun to about 6″ – 7″ inches off the ground.
    Next…I use all .019.
    Anyhow…I hope this helps.
    Let me know.

    I LOVE the 4900.
    …it’s some kind of a formula…
Length x Volume x Pressure x ( how much pressure is needed to keep it steady ) x Viscosity…ETC…
Yes…use the long hose only. AND…I say this cautiously…don’t change paint MFG’s…right now.
When you trouble shoot…change only ONE thing at a time…so you know what it was that was wrong.
Switch hoses…after all you’re saving all the paint being pushed out anyhow.
Try that and let me know.
I have to be “on the street” in 90 minutes. I may take off.
    I’ll check back.

    Hey Barclay
Try PPG. Or…try my Videos. I’m going to lower the price…now.
But…buy only the Video Titled… How I Stripe: Outdoor Striping Paint; Part (1).
That’s how the paint is made.
    So…Try PPG…then SW…then Glidden.
I use these all the time…in a (4) Season state.
    Let me know.

    Hello again…!
The first time I tried my “circle trick”…I had (12) Tether Ball Games to Re-stripe.
    I not only “knocked them out”…! I wasn’t tired…!
    I had a Conventional…well…HAVE…a Conventional…it’s heavy and I sprayed about 5′ of the line at a time!
    (OK…too many exclamation points…)
Next…I started with a Van. It worked for a while…but…not too much room for stencils. But…you go with what fits you.
It worked for me for my first year….then…?…a Pick Up.
I would LOVE to have an enclosed trailer. OR…? an older U-Haul type truck.
    Let me know.
    Dan
    P.S. I kept bumping my head. ( notice…no exclamation point there…? )

    Refresh my memory…
    1) Is it an Airless Machine? If not…you must use a Binks 21 on a Conventional Machine…for Latex…and…as you know…a Low Pressure Diaphragm Gun for Alkyd.
    2) If it’s an Airless…I’m sure you’re using the “Long” hose. Some Airless Guns are equipped with a (2) gun unit. The “long” hose is for the (1) gun set up and then IF…IF…you use the (2) gun…THEN…and only then…can you engage the “short” 6′ hose…to supply it. BUT…you cannot use ONLY the “short” hose for a (1) gun set up. YoOu’ll get the symptoms you described.
That said…you sound like a pro and these aren’t the “fix”.
    3) I’ve had emails complaining of “the line”…from a MFG…I am not aware of. Try PPG. Then…Sherwin Williams. Use “Regular Old Latex”…or Fast Dry…if you want. I have a Video on how they are made and when I use them. BUT…only buy the Video Titled …
How I Stripe: Outdoor Striping Paint; Part (1). AND…if you’re truly interested…let me know…I’ll lower the price…just for you…well…everyone. Hell…I’ll do it now.
    Bottom line…
    A) I use Latex everyday…all Season. It should spray like cream.
    B) Are you using a Conventional?…use a Binks 21.
    C) Are you using an Airless?…use only the long hose.
    D) Switch paint…
BUT…only pick one option…we need to know what worked.
    Did I help?

in reply to: Too Cold #6116

    Hey cjmatoon
    …more of a cleaning agent.
I don’t have time to add anything to my paint. I just pour it in and go.
I only added the “cutting agent” info…so you would know the costs involved.
Try Fast Dry. See if it helps. If not…try Alkyd. I’m sure the Alkyd will do the trick. I used it for 15 years. It always dried…quickly.
Have you been online to search for other MFG’s?
Next…be careful if you do. Always…always…ask …”What is the cutting agent?” And…then find out how much that costs.
    If it’s Toluene… = 15.00 per gallon…! MEK…?…
Mineral Spirits is the cheapest and easiest to find. And…Mineral Spirits cuts Alkyd…just fine.
    How’s that?
    Dan

in reply to: Too Cold #6114

    Hello cjmatoon
    Try this in stages…
First…switch to a “Fast Dry” Latex.
Sherwin Williams calls theirs “Set Fast”.
PPG…I believe is just called “Fast Dry”. I have a Video on my site that explains the difference.
Next…if you’re still experiencing dry times that are too long…switch again…
…to…Alkyd. Glidden sells Alkyd based Paint. THe cutting agent is Mineral Spirits. Mineral Spirits cost about 6.00 per gallon…( keep that in mind…)
I love Alkyd. It shoots like cream. BUT…you cannot throw the waste away…like water…because of the cutting agent. BUT…?…that’s life.
As a last resort…try Acetone. Acetone will separate like Vinegar and Oil in ONE day. So…don’t try to buy 60 gallons and shoot it all. Buy what you need and buy more tomorrow…OR…carry a mixer of some sort…= pain in the butt.
NEXT…the cutting agent here is MEK…or… Acetone…or…other big words…= 15.00 per gallon…NOW…we’re really talking a pain in the rear.
    So…MY preference is this…
    1) Latex as long as I can. Cutting agent = water.
    2) Fast Dry Latex…cutting agent is water. CHEAP and EASY WATER!
    3) Alkyd…and buy some Mineral Spirits. “Paint Thinner” is the same thing.
    4) There is no (4). I’ve never gotten to Acetone. (AND…I hear the first time you use it…the Acetone in the paint itself will dissolve the “old” deposits in the gun and probably give you “clog fits”.
    How’s that?
    Did I help?
    Dan

    in reply to: heat #6113

    Bryan
…that’s it. You must use Latex over new seal. It’s that simple.
So…no…I’m thinking it wasn’t the heat. It was the Acetone over new seal. Yes…it will react.
How does the job look now? Do you have to Re-stripe it?
    Next…I’ve heard a couple complaints…on the Acetone.
    1) When people first put the paint into a used machine…the Acetone…that’s IN the Acetone based paint…will dissolve the old paint flakes inside a used machine…( I know…I know…we all clean our machines…BUT STILL…! ) …then…those little flakes cause clog after clog after clog…for about 2 weeks…then it’s all ok.
Next…the Acetone paint separates like Vinegar and Oil. I was told by 2 striper that it only takes one day to completely separate. AND…they couldn’t keep up with the Re-mixing in their truck.
But…I subbed a job to another striper who used Acetone. It shot beautifully and dried…right now! AND…there is NO pick up.
Last…if I lived in a hot climate…( we have Winter here )…I would NEVER use ANYTHING else BUT…LATEX.
I have a video on my site talking about Outdoor Striping Paint…and what I use…and most importantly…why I use it.
Let me know if you need a discount!
