    …just to be sure…
I’m sure you’re using Latex paint.
Next…I’ve had paint blister…but only under crazy circumstances…
…like…I was on the seal too soon.
But…that was only in a few places. I never slowed down. The lot was to be opened at 7AM the next morning. AND…all was well.
That said…there are weird things that happen…here’s one…
…a fellow striper sprayed an arrow…onto a freshly coated lot.
    The next day…he received a call…asking “WHY?”
He went to the job…the arrow was 10′ away…in the middle of the drive lane…NOT at the beginning where he sprayed it…and it was turned almost 180 degrees. It was pointing kinda off to the side…weird.
I just laughed. It was like it was peeled up…floated away…spun…and landed…and then STUCK!
    …we may never know……
My answer…?…sometimes molecules collide. That’s when we just chuckle.
    How’s the lot now?
    How bad was the “bubbling”?
Bottom line…I don’t quite know beyond that. AND…it just may be those surrounding circumstances.
    That said…has it happened before?

in reply to: Trailer? Do I need one for my striping equipment? #6104

    …OK…here’s a project…
…I say we set up an Expo in Canada. ( Well…there may actually be one that I don’t know of…)
If Nashville and Las Vegas can have one…and be successful…why not Toronto?
I’d go…obviously in Winter when we’re off work.

    Hey Mark
I love Canada. I caught my biggest Walleye in Canada…still have the picture.
Anyhow…I started working out of a van…kept hitting my head.
And…I did see a nice snow mobile trailer. AND…I loved the idea of riding in…then riding out…all forward.
    Keep in touch.

    Hey Bryan
    …nope…not for me.
Now…that said…ask those people in AZ. Some work midnight shifts because of the 105 degree heat. BUT…I think that’s because of Human Safety”…not “paint stuff”.
AND…you’ll be asked…”when is it too cold to paint?”.
ANSWER…?…when my flesh sticks to the metal bars…!
    How’s that?
    Again…unless there’s some special circumstance…nope.

    in reply to: Poles #6090

I try to talk people out of spraying Light Pole Bases.
    1) Concrete does not hold paint. In two years…that Light Pole Base will flake and be ugly…but you’re committed now.
    2) People can still see the Base…without me painting it Yellow.
    3) If I don’t paint it now…I can always come back. It’s not hard and we don’t need to clear the lot.
    4) On that note…you can always hand roll. I know it doesn’t always fill the holes…in the base…but…I still council…”If it were my lot…I would leave the Bases alone”.
    Good luck.
    Dan
P.S. …same advice for the “Wheel Stops” = “Bumper Blocks”. Don’t get me wrong…I’ll paint them. I’ll scrape…if needed…I’ll clean up the flakes on the ground. And…I’ll do a good job. AND…I’ll bill for it.
But…”If it were my lot…I’d leave ’em alone. They look fine”.

    Hello Tom
    How are you?
I just got in from a really cool Temporary Striping job. I’ll post those videos soon.
They’ll be in the Free Videos Section.
Anyhow…if they can help make someone even a little less nervous…that’s good.
I remember my first Temporary Striping job…(5) lanes…(2) miles. No advice.
    Keep in touch.

in reply to: taking off old flaky paint #6086

    Hello Anthony
    …don’t forget…with Pressure Washing…you’ll have WET Cleanup.
Also…there is a way to “blast” off the old paint with something like “Baking Soda”.
I had one client in 17 years ask me to do what you are being asked to do.
I found a Sub and just bid the job. THe clean up was on them. THe “Baking Soda” was Environmentally friendly…and apparently…it just swept up…or vacuum.
Next…I do tell almost everyone…”I wouldn’t paint curb or Wheel Stops = Bumper Blocks. The paint will not hold. It’ll “Pop” off instead of wearing of. Then it’s ugly.
Next…I have a Video on my site explaining “Indoor Paints”. I’ve used Yellow Sealer on a floor of a Hospital Parking Garage. The area was 60′ x 36′. (2) coats…hand applied. AND…it is a tight “turn around”. Guess what…? It’s still going strong.
Anyhow…I never got the “Soda Blasting” job. I find people won’t pay the price. But…give them a bid…with an Option.
Option 1) Hand scrape the worst areas and reapply paint.
    I hope this helps.

in reply to: Seminar; San Antonio, TX #6059

    Here’s my Seminar Update.
    Both locations have been Reserved.
    (NC and TX.)
    However, not everyone has paid.
But…there seems to be enough interest…so…I booked both locations…(and my room).
Next…I put the updated info on my Facebook Page. (American Striping)
If you go there…look on the “Events” Page.
If you have any questions…let me know…I’ll help.
    Right now…?…I’m off to work.
    Thanks.
    See ya.

in reply to: To Late Already to start a Striping business? #6056

I’m in too. I started in August. I made $4000.00 that season. I stopped November 1st…or was it October?
It was 16 years ago…or was it 17?
    Start.
Let me know if you need help.

in reply to: new to all of this #6055

    Hello Dakota
    I’m with Shep…and you. It shouldn’t “squirt”.
But…are you saying…”hour glassing”? Or…squirting sideways…as if there’s a clog or piece or foreign object just trying to come through the line?…making the line “squirt” sideways?
Next…I never strain my paint. I never have trouble either. I do have a filter on my Titan…none on my Graco.
I also have my paint shaken…that should be a given.
    Next…simple things…
    1) Turn the engine all the way up.
    2) Turn the pump all the way up.
    Now try it.
    Next…if it’s good…and not hour glassing…done.
But…you can back off the pressure a quarter turn. Try it again. If it’s still good…back off a quarter turn again…until it starts to hour glass. Then turn it back up.
    Next…I always use a .019. The .017 doesn’t give me enough paint. I walk normal speed…not 1 MPH!
Next…spray water through the machine. Does it have the same problem? NO? Cool.
So…we need to find the point where the paint isn’t like water…but will “break up”…or better said…”fan”.
So…add a splash of water to this stuff we call paint. Don’t “thin” the paint…just add a cup to 4 gallons. Circulate. Try it again.
Do those things. Let me know.
Last…I have to use certain paint that is higher in “solid pieces”…for Regional Airports. This causes clogs while using smaller tips = .017…sometimes. Enough to make you mad.
Here…I use .021. I don’t want to mess around. Some will say…I’m using too much paint. Really?
Bottom line…help me with the word…”squirt”.
And again…try some of these things.
    I hope I helped.

in reply to: over spray of paint and crackfill #6054

    Hello Ron
Ouch. Once I helped another striper stripe a parking garage…on a (3) day weekend.
He called…”Dan…you wanna grab some handlebars?” Absolutely. It was nice to just walk around…stripe…and not be in charge…AND…watch another crew.
    Then…?…I saw them…down below…spraying the word…ONLY. But…it was spelled…OLNY.
    Again…ouch. It happens.
    Sometimes…it’s a wire brush.
But…there are products that will strip the paint. Some schools use it. The Maintenance Person will hand roll the “Friendly Stripper”…(don’t let your mind go too far with that)…(I was recently asked if I was a “stripper”…yeah…picture me in my painter’s pants…spinning around a pole…again…ouch…)…ok…back to “striping”.
There are products that will eat the paint and stay environmentally friendly. Then…power wash…maybe wire brush…etc.
Try these. Look around. Call a school.
Next…there are several stripers who purposefully stripe a 4″ line right onto the asphalt. If your help cannot make the paint hit right at the place where the curb hits the asphalt…and…sometimes it is difficult…just add a 4″ line right there = right on the asphalt. It’ll clean it up. Make it look good. In other words…you’re covering up the “over spray”…that exists on the pavement.
    These are some ideas.
    I hope I helped.
    Let me know.

in reply to: Uneven Pavement #6044

    Hello kcchief402
(I saw KC play the Lions when I was a kid. Len Dawson, Buck Buchanan, Elmo Wright, etc.)
I agree. AND…I think we’ve all switched sides when we see a catch basin in the way. Hit one of those…!
So…yes…on uneven pavement…see if you can stripe from a different side. On Centerlines…watch out for the catch basin…especially if it’s in disrepair. BANG!
(I also saw the Jets play the Lions. Joe Namath played. ! My Dad took me to the Thanksgiving Day parades…then the game.)
    See ya.
