At this point in time I don’t think there is any doubt that coal tar is the most durable of the materials mentioned. Coal tar coatings are more fuel resistant and oxidize less rapidly than AE coatings and asphalt type rejuvinators. Asphalt actually oxidizes pretty rapidly and since probably 60% or more of the coatings applied are applied to turn the pavement black again then the “graying” (oxidation) of the AE type coatings can be a problem.
As you stated, there are areas where CT sealer is not available. If you are in one of these areas then you must use AE sealer. From my personal observation not all AE coatings are equal. You must do your homework and fine the best sealer available for your use, whether it’s AE or CT coatings.
All manufacturs are constantly working to improve their coatings so it is just a matter of time before someone developes a durable long lasting fuel resistant asphalt sealer.

When someone my age (61) is confronted with a dramatic change in life, such as the purchase of our company by Bonsal American, you have a lot of questions concerning this really, I mean really huge change. This purchase process has been going on for several months so we have had a chance go get to know the Bonsal people pretty well. Bonsal is a large company with a small company feel so I don’t expect our customers to see any difference in the family atmosphere that we have always tried to put forth. The only difference anyone should see is the paperwork you will receive. Since I am an old timer in this business any kind of change can be unnerving. but this merger has gone really well. I’m looking forward to working with Bonsal American and I think our customers will like some of the products that are going to be available because of this merger. Harry Carter, Gem SealParticipantI’m not sure the curse of competing against less than reputable contractors ever ends. The problem you are describing was happening when sealer was 90 cents a gallon and latex was 45 dollars a bucket. But, as one of our former Presidents said, “I FEEL YOUR PAIN.” It seems we at Gem Seal are notified of a pending price increase on something almost hourly, and most of these increases are energy related. All we can do is try to educate our customers about the people that like to take shortcuts.

We pre add the different latexes to our tar prior to emulsification. This process makes the material tougher and more fuel resistant. POLYTAR also oxidizes less rapidly than a standard sealer and also bonds better to the pavement surface. In scrub test in our lab we have seen a 40% better wear with PT vs. standard coatings. Harry Carter, Gem SealParticipantI’m not really familiar with the business in your state. Perhaps you should attend the National Pavement show in Nashville next week. All manufacturers in the US should be there, this would give you an excellent opportunity to feel everyone out.
